His mother died of breast cancer when he was 3. His father raised him on his own for several years before meeting Michael when Nicholas was eight. Michael was gay; William had kind of half-heartedly identified as bisexual, from college experimentation. It didn't stop him from falling in love with Michael when Michael was in Maine on a fishing trip. He fell head over heels for Michael and Michael fell head over heels for both of them. William and Nick moved down to Florida, where Michael's practice was. They were in a really liberal area of St. Petersburg so Nicholas never got much flack for his parents. Not as much as he could have, as a teenager, at least. When Nicholas was 15, he was at Michael's office, waiting for him to take Nicholas to soccer practice when a former patient's wife came in, enraged with grief that Michael hadn't caught the cancer that killed her husband sooner. Nicholas sat her down and got her talking, calming her down until someone qualified got there. It pretty much set Nicholas's path for him. He went to college at USF and graduated with honors in 2004. He got an apartment in Tampa and started work at a practice not far from his apartment. He lives quietly and pretty much successfully ignores Tampa weirdness. One day she was gathering flowers and the ground opened up and Hades rose from it, taking her to the underworld. Her mother wept and mourned and made the seasons change to winter. Finally Zeus got Hades to agree to return Persephone so Demeter would let the earth grow again, but Hades had given Persephone a pomagrate, having her eat three seeds so she had to return to the underworld for half of each year. As queen of the underworld, she found the music of Orpheus so hauntingly sad, she allowed Orpheus to bring his wife Eurydice back to the land of the living, as long as she walked behind him and he never tried to look at her face until they reached the surface. Orpheus agreed, but failed, looking back at the very end to make sure his wife was following, and he lost Eurydice forever. Aphrodite gave Adonis, her consort to Persephone to watch over, but Persephone also was amazed at his beauty and refused to give him back. The argument between the two goddesses was settled by Zeus with Adonis spending four months with Aphrodite, four months with Persephone and four months of the year on his own. When Hades pursued a nymph named Minthe, Persephone turned her into a mint plant.
